We First

June 14, 2020

Everyone raised in any religion or spiritual tradition anywhere was taught something called the Golden Rule.

It goes like this:

This is the sum of duty: Do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you. (Hinduism)

Treat not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful. (Buddhism)

One word which sums up the basis of all good conduct. . . loving kindness. Do not do unto others what you do not want done to yourself. (Confucianism)

Regard your neighbor’s gain as your own gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss. (Taoism)

What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. This is the whole Torah. The rest is commentary. (Judaism)

I am a stranger to no one, and no one is a stranger to me. (Sikhism)

In everything, do unto others as you would have them do unto you for this is the law. (Christianity)

Not one of you truly believes until you wish for others what you wish for yourself. (Islam)

We are as much alive as we keep the earth alive. (Native Spirituality)

Do not do unto others whatever is injurious to yourself. (Zoroastrianism)

One should treat all creatures in the world as one would like to be treated. (Jainism)

Lay not on any soul a load that you would not wish to be laid upon you, and desire not for anyone the things you would not desire for yourself. (Baha’i)

We affirm and promote respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. (Unitarianism)

A rule is an explicit regulation or principle governing conduct. A rule is a law.

.We all know that the only law that truly exists is the Law of Love.

The Law of Love is the Law of We.

There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.

This is what we are all learning during this extraordinary year: Each and everyone of us needs to stop breaking the law. How? By putting our me-first agenda aside and becoming a we-first world.

By substituting we for me. By living as us not I. By gauging every thought and action and belief against the Law of Love.

By following the same Golden Rule taught everywhere in the world.

By living Love.

Let’s all stop breaking the law and start living the Golden Rule.

We first.

We always.

This is the law of Love.

“If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don’t hesitate. Give into it. . . whatever it is, don’t be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.”   - Mary Oliver
